Services

Alison undertakes a wide range of conservation services which can be employed either together, or in isolation, to ensure that your historic textiles are best protected from future deterioration.

All textiles are treated sensitively and with the utmost care. Conservation can also be carried out onsite, working in public view, and engaging with visitors if required.

Condition surveys can be conducted for individual objects or collections. A survey will outline: the current condition and stability of the textiles; areas and causes of deterioration; an estimate for any remedial conservation needed to stabilise the object and, where possible, different treatment and budget options; recommendations regarding future display or storage. For large objects or collections, the survey can be carried out on-site.

Remedial treatments are generally carried out in the studio and are fully documented by means of photography and written reports. Conservation grade materials are used in all treatments.

Emergency treatments are sometimes necessary where the budget for a full conservation treatment is not currently accessible. The aim of these treatments is to stabilise the textile in the short- to mid-term until funds become available.

Advice on collection care and storage can be provided, including recommendations relating to suitable display and packing materials, environmental conditions, preventive conservation, pest management and regular monitoring and maintenance.

Conservation cleaning of historic textiles on public display can be conducted on-site and at height if necessary. Smaller, portable items can be cleaned in the studio if preferred. A regular and systematic programme of conservation cleaning is particularly recommended for textiles on open display to prevent deterioration from environmental and physical factors.

Tapestry condition monitoring programme is an on-site service that provides a regular, ongoing condition assessment for tapestries. Regular assessment enables any changes in condition to be recorded and monitored and remedial treatment or cleaning to be carried out in a timely manner. The aim is to reduce the likelihood of a full conservation treatment in the future.
